Did you know ... the Baths of CRO can be an asset for the entire region of Ribacôa. But what does Cro? - Do you have Celtic origins, as "Cro-Magnon" (Fr.), which means "mine", "cave"? .
The medicinal waters and the Sacred
Man has always established a special relationship with the "water", especially those with physical and chemical characteristics outside the common standard, and they are attributed a divine origin, they propitiated therapeutic properties, and that they referred to the world of sacred. The adjective "holy", or the patronage of a pagan deity, an angel, a saint or a saint, are very frequent in the spa world, almost always, the "Holy" replaced the "Nymphs".
The spa also have the Cro its chapel, very simple to Our Lady of Miracles (marked with celebrations for the month of August).
Spa in the CRO were the Romans
It is more secular than the use of these waters, situated on the banks of the Ribeira do Boi (also known as Cro-Brook tributary on the left bank of the river Coa) because Roman remains were discovered, suggesting their use. For example here in 1935 was discovered a hoard of Roman coins. These spas have the time could be referenced by the Romanization resorts Curo (C'ro), recalling the famous Latin phrase curat-ut-valeas look for your health, and here's another chance to here his name. Remember the other most famous spa that also begin with the same prefix: Termas da Curia (**).
Brief History of the Baths of CRO
It is reported in the region that a descendant of Count of the Guard in the late eighteenth century, to have bathed in these waters, having been cured of his illness from rheumatism, so decided to build near the spring, two dwelling houses and a house with bath to continue to be treated with utmost convenience. For completeness, this primitive and elemental spa together and fulfill promises of graces obtained, also had a chapel devoted to Our Lady of Miracles, after making a home for the hermit.
However, the earliest reference to the CRO is 1726 and spoke of the remarkable curative effects of bathing in these waters and the need to create facilities where appropriate.
Since the source has always aroused great interest in the region, the people of the counties of Sambucus, Guard, Penamacor, Almeida, Pinhel, Castelo Rodrigo and even Spain, believing in the miracles of the Lady or the therapeutic virtues of the waters, there began to go all years. Then raised tents, covered with thatch.
One of the first great enthusiasts improving conditions for water catchment of the CRO, and to this end has spared no effort was José Dinis da Fonseca, and even have performed the first tests of water in the Polytechnic Academy of Oporto, in 1891 .
Only in 1935 was built a resort. Beyond this, they formed part of the spa complex, the church of Our Lady of Miracles, Miracles of the board (where the swimmers were staying during the summer and took their meals), the former telephone station and post office, storage pits thermal water and some houses belonging to people of greater means, that there were bathing.
In 1974 the farm was abandoned and all buildings were doomed to abandonment and subject to looting and vandalism.
Recommendation of the medical spa of Cro
Only in 1891 undertook an initial examination of the water chemical CRO, saying he was being "hipossalinas, sulphurous, sodium bicarbonate", adds that today, being rich in fluoride and thiosulfates, so they have excellent medicinal properties and is recommended for treatment of skin diseases, rheumatism, and respiratory tract.
The Spa of CRO were deactivated in 1974 but are currently being targeted for rehabilitation.
A little bit of geology, who are not interested to jump to the next subtitle
Despite a exsurgência the surface, the water treatment is being captured to 30 feet deep by four holes at 23 º C springing from granite porphyroid.
The percolation of water emergencies the CRO is associated with major tectonic events. The area of infiltration waters from runoff that serve as feeding the aquifer corresponds to a wide range of fractured NW-SE direction which passes close to the Guard and about 8 km west of the CRO.
The Spa of CRO and its relationship with the Village of Bull
Also in the Ribeira Ox, in the Village of Taurus, there is a spring with similar characteristics, and the last time I was there, still watching the aquistas traces of dwellings, probably from the early twentieth century. This site could also be recovered and be connected with the spa CRO.
We believe strongly that this space can be optimized an important development in this region. In fact there are four sets springs that are or have been rehabilitated in the district of Guarda: Fonte Santa (Almeida) (*), Longroiva (Meda) (*), Cavaca (Aguiar da Beira) (*) and are a little light at the bottom of Tunnel for the development of interior border.
The spa is one of the Cro very pleasant place, with the river pier of the Ox, the pride of the ruinous resort of office, the rustle of the river, the beautiful riparian corridor of alder, ash and oak, but the water is, in its naturally untouched, which makes us feel good.
