rio sabor "The

Have spent many years and I was still a mere sorcerer's apprentice when I made the discipline of Geology Field II on the banks of the Sabor River in the municipality of Macedo de Knights. In addition to the complexity of the rocks from the depths of time of the Massif de Morais, I recall the beauty of the region, always with the beautiful backdrop of the River riparian corridor, do not even know if the lake will reach this area, but the fact is that change or submerge the Sabor River, is a crime against nation.
"Taste The river is considered the last wild river in Portugal due to the absence of dams along the more than 120 km of his journey through the Tras-os-Montes, the isolation of their valley and the great diversity of natural habitats and species occur there. However, this natural sanctuary hangs on the weight of the possible decision to build a large dam in its lower portion, which will submerge about 50% of the national extension of the river.
The reasons for this impedirmos true environmental catastrophe are:
1 - The Baixo Sabor has a unique and irreplaceable ecological value. In this area there is a flora and vegetation of unique characteristics in Portugal, where we highlight the particular communities associated with the beds filled. In the valley of Tang also appear the most extensive and well-preserved holm and cork oaks of Tras-os-Montes, and the presence of limestone and ultrabasic substrates allows the occurrence of a large number of endemics. This area also presents a high diversity of habitats (20 included in the Habitats Directive, of which three are considered a conservation priority). The importance of this area is attested by the qualification of part of its section in the Natura 2000 network.
Along the river Flavor is an important bird community rupicolous, where stands the presence of species such as Bonelli's eagle, the golden eagle, the Egyptian vulture and black stork, a fact that led to their inclusion in a Protection Zone Special Areas (SPAs) and an IBA (Important Bird Area, BirdLife International).
The Valley of Taste is an important ecological corridor and refuge for a diverse wildlife community, where stress species like the wolf, the roe, the wildcat, the mole and a water otter, and represents the main spawning site and nursery of the fish community of a large area (from the Tang to the lake of Valeira Douro).
Taste The river is one of the last non-dammed rivers and is probably the one that is closest to the natural state in Portugal and is the last bastion of a once fertile territory in rivers and striking landscapes.

rio sabor 300x263 A Barragem do rio Sabor Vale a pena a sua construção? 2 - Large dams have impacts too high and irreversible (eg destruction of valuable ecosystems, extinction and substantial reduction of species of migratory and resident fish, respectively, contamination of water supplies, trapping sediments and nutrients, etc..) and have a lifetime of low (on average between 50 and 70) and should be avoided at all costs.
3 - urgententemente should be defined and implemented a national energy plan that identifies the country's needs and propose a comprehensive set of alternative production and energy management in the medium term, instead of leaving the choice of works was sporadic and not very relevant in the national context (energy produced by this dam would - at best expectations - with only 0.6% of energy consumed in Portugal!).
Should be given top priority to implementation of policies to encourage energy efficiency (Portugal is a country with lower energy efficiency of the entire European Union!) And renewable energy that do not contemplate major hydroelectric works. It is also necessary to begin to act in the management of energy demand, by abandoning the so-called supply management, since that is recognized as the one that best fits a logic of sustainable development.
4 - A genuine adoption of the principles underlying the Kyoto Protocol requires that the reduction of CO2 emissions in Portugal is achieved by adopting a set of cost-effective measures that have been studied in terms of industry, transport and housing, incentives for energy sources (including solar and wind), energy conservation and expansion of the electricity grid, avoiding recourse to the construction of new large dams.

5 - The importance of the natural river valley Flavor amply justifies its classification as a protected area of national interest. In addition, an increasingly international environment conducive to an integrated local and regional development, respecting and valuing all the valences of the territory, the unique landscape of this valley, its rich flora and fauna, excellent river conditions for sports Whitewater and associated historical and cultural heritage, are valuable resources for tourism contact with nature and an innovative and intelligent sustainable development.
Rather, the construction of the Baixo Sabor dam means the irreversible destruction of priority crops, as the valley of Felgar - one of the most fertile in the whole province of Tras-os-Montes - which annually produces about 60,000 liters of oil high quality and important natural and cultural values of the region, promoting the progressive abandonment of rural areas, exemplified in the nearby dam Pocinho, whose population is almost in a state of abandonment and quite deteriorated.
