"From this lookout point which is the beautiful castle of Castro Marim (**), may wonder at the curious landscape of the lattice, mixed estuaries, marshes, brackish bodies of water, salt marshes, pastures, ponds, pillars and extensions without vegetation. A geometry of lands and waters that mirror the salt gives unforeseen consequences. Currently salinicultura, fisheries, agriculture and fisheries divide among themselves the essence of natural resources.
Marshland Nature Reserve of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, merges with the salt marsh that extends along the river Guadiana, between Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, flat area of low quotas, crossed by a network of estuaries to ensure drainage and open to salt water. The dominant Alinda dull green in the spring with red Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum that covers the slopes of salt. The higher areas have patches of Mediterranean maquis.
The estuaries are the breeding place for fish and crustaceans. Castro Marim or simply serves as a habitat refuge for numerous waterfowl populations, including the long-leg and Taylor. The white stork stands by the number of occupied nests. Also present summer birds, the case of Flamingo and Swallow sea-dwarf, and wintering, as the torch-peas-and right-Semipalmated common.
In the coastal dunes near record the occurrence of the Chameleon, observable in certain parts of the Algarve coastline and up the barrier islands of Ria Formosa ". 1
"This Nature Reserve is one of the most important wetlands in the country. It is an essential habitat for thousands of aquatic birds that are here are good nesting and wintering areas, fully justifying its status as a wetland of international importance given to it by the Ramsar Convention.
The Castro Marim Marshland stands out also for shelter and breeding for many species of fish, shellfish, functioning as a natural nursery. In addition to the wetland covering about 66% of 2089 ha of protected area, this also includes dry areas of agricultural use and areas of higher elevation that correspond to the slopes as the Algarve hills, with animal and plant species.
It is therefore in the range of existing biotopes lies the richness of this protected area, as attractive as sensitive to any human intervention misguided '2
"The salt ponds are made of traditional marine and small, with great diversity in its path, making them authentic mazes. The water travels a route from the compartmentalised tank estuary supply to the "butcher" (small squares where the salt form), and evaporating heating progressively along the route.
The season begins at the salt spring with cleaning the sea. In mid-June they are covered with white and first raza is ready to be harvested. This salt is certified and owes its quality to the natural characteristics of the area and the use of craft techniques. "3
The Reserve has a modern Interpretation Centre reception and orientation for visitors. From here you can take walks properly signed.
The International Bridge over the Guadiana river, built between 1985 and 1991, came to appreciate too the region and form a beautiful set with the marsh.
