Did you know ... the church of Santo António Coimbra was in the groves where Fernando is transmuted in San Antonio?
The church of Santo António dos Olivais sits on top of a hill where once stood the small hermitage of St. Anthony, Dona Urraca donated by the Franciscans in 1217.
Before departing for North Africa on a mission of evangelization came to the church of St. Anthony of groves in 1219, the five Franciscans who were to be beheaded by the Sultan of Morocco, they would become known as the Martyrs of Morocco 5. In 1220 arrived in Coimbra mortal relics of the Five Martyrs of Morocco who were to guard the monastery of Santa Cruz (***) where they are today and can be worshiped (there is also a remarkable Ark-Relicária Martyrs sent to do Monastery Lorvão (**) to receive some of the spoils and which is now in the Museum Machado de Castro (***) - read here ).

This episode has indelibly marked the lives of Fernando Bouillon, Crosier scholar monk, born in Lisbon, causing it to unite the spirit of evangelization and Franciscan poverty, gathering at the Hermitage of the groves of Coimbra - so Anthony was born in Coimbra. After a short stay at the hermitage leave for Morocco ( read on ).
Soon after the death of Antonio, spent only 11 months, holiness come in 1233, in the process of canonization faster to date. With his canonization in 1233 that changed is the invocation of this temple, thus failing to be dedicated to St. Anthony to call upon our saint.
In 1247, the Franciscan friars leave the church of St. Anthony of groves, perhaps the inconvenience of so much popular pilgrimage, and desiring to calm, settle in the Convent of San Francisco Bridge in Santa Clara, near the river Mondego due to floods Indomitable, was abandoned in the sixteenth century and became the new convent of San Francisco (now the target of upgrading - read here) dolomitic at the base of the hill of Mount Hope, where lies the Monastery of Santa Clara New (** ), the convent of San Francisco Bridge has nothing exists. The church of the Holy groves would be delivered to the chapter of the Old Cathedral of Coimbra.

The church of Santo António dos Olivais keep it to a place of pilgrimage to Saint Anthony. The set was expanded in the late fifteenth century, as a consequence of the growing cult Anthony. The Church of St Anthony Olivais was to occupy roughly the space that you currently have.

In the sixteenth century the church is the possession of the Capuchin Franciscans. These friars in 1673 reedificam St. Anthony's cell which was adapted to the Chapter House which is now a small chapel with a Gothic portal, which serves as a mortuary chapel, here are the beautiful Moorish-style tiles. Also build a modest home convent at the site now occupied by the cemetery, leaving space in the cloister of the present church yard.

In the eighteenth century there have been major projects: modification of the façade of the church, vestry, porch and staircase access and its side chapels.
In 1835, one year after the suppression of religious orders, church and convent were sold. On the night of November 10, 1851, the dependencies of the convent are devoured by violent fire, saving, however, the church vestry and outstanding (*).
In May 1855 the parish church is the parish of St. Anthony of olive groves. From November 1974 the Franciscan friars, coming from Italy, make this set now treating him with great care.
What is now the church of Santo António dos Olivais
The church of Santo António dos Olivais is the kind of high shrines, called sacred mountain ( read here about a site sacred mountains in Europe ). It has a staircase built in the eighteenth century and adapted to the natural slope of the hill. It is composed of thirty stone steps divided into six sections and flanked by six chapels are observed barred naive compositions of sculpture, clay, figuring scenes from the Passion of Christ.
Almost everything you see today was made in the eighteenth century, such as the staircase, the church and some outbuildings. From medieval times there is only the doorway, dating from the fifteenth century and archaeological remains.
The facade is simple-minded, with a large arc to precede the Gothic portico, with a big window, and two niches to ladeá it, with the figures of San Antonio and San Francisco.
The interior of the church of Santo António dos Olivais
The church interior is simple, with a nave and with the head formed by a single chapel.
The church is beautiful and has some artistic value might fashioned blue tiles in the first half of the eighteenth century with several scenes depicting the life of St. Anthony that are worth being seen, the more interesting scenes than by aesthetic quality, the right-hand side preaching to the fish, cut the miracle of the foot, the encounter with S. Francisco and the death of Saint Anthony, on the left the preaching of Saint Anthony sat in hickory; Anthony relieving the father from the gallows; taking the Franciscan habit and the miracle of the Eucharist. There are three altars of Ioannina season. In the main altar is a large canvas depicting Our Lady of Conception, dated 1779 and painted by Pascoale Parente. In the other two altarpieces are two images of St. Francis and S. John the Baptist.
