- Tile panels from the railway station of Vilar Formoso.
The tile panels from station road to Iron Vilar Formoso, along with the station's Port of St. Benedict (**) are perhaps the most beautiful stations in the path of Ferro Portuguese. The coatings are one of the tile originality of the Portuguese railway architecture and were painted and placed in the first half of the twentieth century and which are distributed all over the country
The tiles had the task of beautifying the area and advertise some of the landmarks, lifestyles and history of the region - in short is still a good tourist attraction for travelers and encouragement to the locals feel proud for their iconic locations.
The way station Iron Vilar Formoso was inaugurated on August 3, 1882 by the Royal family, King Louis, Queen Maria Pia and Prince D. Carlos. It must have been one day very festive raianos for people who would look at the future with hope - after all, the past 129 years has not developed the Beira Interior and dying continues - despite the crudeness of the facts, the sound steam locomotives, allowed some progress commercial Vilar Formoso - emerged pensions, eateries, pharmacies, warehouses, collection and despatch of goods. He settled customs of a first class and a section supervisor. They settled for the border officials meant bureaucratic control of passengers, luggage and review fees.
Suddenly the unnamed village woke categorized as a trading and administrative seeing lost its usual calming.
Now the cars go by road from the A25 rapid, Vilar Formoso is now a town hurt by the changes dictated by the European Union and the Schengen agreement. No border no orders, conferences, fees and fines. Drained to the need to stay and food in the village.

In his quest to Spain, or at his coming, if you have some spare time, visit the railway station of Vilar Formoso, and be enchanted with the magnificence of the building and the tile panels embedded in the walls (*). It is one of the finest collections of twentieth-century Portuguese tiles and represent typical landscapes and some of the most remarkable monuments of Portuguese (Monastery of Batalha, Alcobaça, Old Cathedral of Coimbra, Guarda Cathedral, the church's mercy Mangualde, ...). Were performed at the factory widow Lamego, Lisbon in mid-twentieth century.
However are of unequal value and different authors. Beautiful and monumental are, for example, the panels of the toilets, which depict the bathers on the beach of Figueira da Foz and unfortunately mitigated by not being in the prime area of the station and in front of you have made the construction of a building without nexus.
Who was John Alves de Sa?
The best tiles are written by João Alves de Sá (1878-1982), a leading watercolourists twentieth century in Portugal, for its sensitivity, unprecedented brightness, transparency, chromaticism impressive and smooth. Due to its Germanic influence refrain heard over the idealism of the new state of the art.
He was awarded high honors as the medal of honor in the National Watercolor Society of Fine Arts and the first prize Roque Gameiro (1947), the National Information Office. It is represented at the Chiado Museum (***) at the Museum of the City of Lisbon (**) in the house-museum Patudos in Almeirim (**), and in several private collections. See here one of his watercolors.
At the station the way Iron Vilar Formoso worked Júlio Resende, in 1958, early in his career, one of the greatest Portuguese painters, who died recently - the same as, for example, developed the "Ribeira Black" (1986) (*) the Historic Centre of Oporto (*****) - its panels, though missing, should be restored in accordance with the opinion and taste of the master, which would make it more appealing Vilar Formoso.
These representations tiles, painted during the twentieth century, this and other dozens of railway stations in the country, associated to the propaganda of the Estado Novo apology that he intended to assert itself in the archetypes of identity and national values, the panels gave (give ) visitors to the basics of what you see in Portugal and also represented the agricultural labor of the people. Anyway, they are good tourist commercials made in many cases, masterfully.
Times marked in Vilar Formoso are the waves of the 2nd World War, when trains were bound for Spain or came with refugees (have been here hundreds of Jews saved by Aristides Sousa Mendes). As early as in the last quarter of the twentieth century wave of migration has national reference station and the name of Vilar Formoso as a symbol of a last farewell to the homeland. Now that our politicians are asking our young people to emigrate and to leave your comfort zone, appeal to young people so ridiculous to ignore the ruler of his name Alexandre Mestre, but those who do not pass through the station and the way Iron Vilar Realize that fair summary of the remarkable heritage that we have built throughout our history and beauty that is reflected in Portugal - a veritable Eden waiting for the Portuguese-wonderful people, develop your earthly Paradise, since our politicians for mishandling or with bad intentions have not been able to do, except, either case, here I come again with John II.
